December 27, 1986. San Diego was rocked by a crime that shattered
the public's trust forever. 20 year old Cara Knott was driving home to
Escondido when she vanished into the cold night. Her white Volkswagen Beetle was later
found abandoned at the bottom of a dark highway off-ramp. But the horror
intensified when her body was discovered sixty five feet below the Mercy Road bridge.
Investigators soon noticed a chilling detail: a Highway Patrol officer with deep scratches on his
face. Officer Craig Peyer had pulled Cara over in a secluded area,
far from his normal patrol zone. Forensic fiber evidence and witness testimonies eventually linked the
