A rotten snail in a ginger ale bottle literally created the law of negligence. In 1932,
a woman's friend bought her a drink. She poured some, drank it, and then poured
the rest, only for a decomposed snail to fall out. She got seriously ill but couldn't
sue the manufacturer. The law at the time said only the person who bought the product could sue.
She fought the case, and the court established the "duty of care," meaning companies are responsible
for the final person who uses their product. So yeah, you can thank a gross snail for
modern consumer rights.
