The visible part of your tooth is actually changing all the time. What you see is
called the "clinical crown," but the real, full crown covered in enamel is the
"anatomical crown," and it stays the same size. As you age or your gums recede,
more of that tooth becomes visible, making your clinical crown look longer. This exposes the
root, which isn't smooth. It has little indentations called root concavities. Floss can just glide
right over these spots, leaving gunk behind. That’s why your hygienist might
recommend interdental brushes. So, the tooth you see isn't the whole
story.
