Unleashing Ancient Carbon: A Rapid Crisis

We've unleashed millions of years of ancient carbon in less than two centuries.

For eons, plants and ocean plankton absorbed CO2. When they died,

their carbon sank to the bottom of the ocean. Over millions of years,

immense pressure turned them into fossil fuels like coal and oil, locking that carbon

deep underground. It was a slow, natural burial. Then we started digging it all up.

For the last 150 years, we've been burning these fuels for energy,

releasing all that ancient, stored carbon back into the atmosphere at an incredible

speed, overwhelming the planet's finely tuned system.
