Walking Backwards

I swear I faced the sunrise every day. But my feet

know roads I never meant to take. I tell myself this time I've

changed. Still sleeping with the ghosts I couldn't save. Every promise written

in my breath. Turns to smoke the moment I blink. I keep aiming

for a future I want. But I'm anchored to the things I think.

I cut the mirror out of the wall. Still feel it watching me fall.

I chase tomorrow with open eyes. But yesterday won't let go.

I'm walking backwards. Calling it progress. Moving ahead but I'm facing my past.
