Picture Book to Video: Turn a Kids' Story Into a Video in 5 Minutes

Photograph the pages, pull out and clean the text, then paste it into Revid's From script tool with a calm narrator voice and the right screen ratio. You can also keep the book's own illustrations.

How to Turn Your Kids Favourite Story to a Video Less than 5 Minutes
On this page

To turn a picture book into a video, photograph each page, convert the photos to a PDF and extract the text. Paste the cleaned text into Revid (Create, then From script), pick a calm narrator voice and a screen ratio, and click Generate video. It takes under 5 minutes once the text is ready.

The step most people rush is the text itself. Text pulled from a photographed page often brings page numbers, broken lines and stray characters with it, and the AI narrator reads every one of them aloud. Two minutes of cleanup is the difference between a bedtime video that flows and one that stumbles on every page.

Here is a finished example, an original story called "Luna's Adventure in Wonderland":

Step 1: Get the story text out of the book

Start with the story your child asks for every night: a fairy tale, an adventure book or a bedtime classic. If you already have it as digital text, copy it and skip to Step 2. If it only exists in print, convert it to text first.

How to turn a physical picture book into text

  1. Photograph each page with your phone, flat and in good light so the words are sharp.
  2. Convert the photos to a PDF with a free converter such as Smallpdf's JPG to PDF tool.
  3. Extract the text from that PDF with a free online converter such as PDF to Text.
  4. Clean the text: delete page numbers, the copyright page and garbled characters, then join lines that were split mid-sentence.
  5. Copy the cleaned text. You will paste it in Step 2.

Punctuation shapes how the narrator reads. Picture books lean on page turns instead of full stops, so add commas and periods where a parent would naturally pause.

If you would rather skip the copy and paste, Revid's PDF to Video Converter turns the scanned PDF itself into a narrated video. No book handy? Write an original story starring your child with Revid's AI script generator, which is how the example above was made.

Decide one thing before you open Revid: do you want new AI scenes drawn from the text, or the book's own illustrations on screen? The steps below follow the first route; the second has its own section further down.

Prompt to try

Make a 90-second bedtime story video in 16:9 about a little fox named Pip who cannot fall asleep and goes outside to ask the moon for help. Open with the line "Once upon a time, a little fox could not fall asleep." Use a soft, calm narrator, warm watercolor storybook visuals, gentle music and short pauses between pages.

Run it in Revid

Step 2: Paste the story into Revid

  1. Click Create at the top of the left sidebar (or press C). The page asks "What do you want to make?"
  2. Pick the From script tab. It opens the voiceover video tool, the same one behind the AI TikTok video generator page.
  3. Paste the story into the box titled Your video narrator script.

The Create page: pick From script, then paste your story

Three formatting tricks make a story script work better:

  • One page per line. A new line tells Revid to generate new content, so put each page of the book on its own line and each gets its own scene.
  • Picture hints in brackets. Text in [square brackets] is treated as a note, not narration: in the script flow it becomes a visual hint for that scene, for example [a small fox curled up in a cozy burrow, warm evening light].
  • Page-turn pauses. Add <break time="1.0s" /> between pages for a one-second pause. Pauses are capped at 10 seconds.

So Pip went outside to ask the moon for help.

Prefer a more cinematic result where the AI writes the scenes for you? The AI Movie Maker turns a story or a one-line idea into a short movie, and it works with the same pasted text.

Step 3: Pick the voice, media type and screen ratio

Below the script you set how the story looks and sounds.

  • Voice: choose a soft, warm narrator and preview a few before you commit. Revid has 1,000+ AI voices in 70+ languages.
  • Media type: under Choose media type, pick what illustrates each scene (table below).
  • Screen ratio: the ratio picker offers 9:16, 16:9, 1:1 and 4:5.
  • Music: pick a calm track from the built-in library of 199 tracks.
  • Language: if the story is not in English, set it in Advanced options, then Language & Localization, then Language (the default is Automatic).

Which settings work best for a children's story video?

Where it will be watchedScreen ratioMedia typeVoice
TV or laptop at bedtime16:9AI video or Animated AI imagesSoft and calm
Phone or tablet held upright9:16Animated AI imagesSoft and calm
Family chats9:16Animated AI imagesWarm, expressive

One rule covers most cases: if your child watches on a TV, choose 16:9; if they watch on a phone held upright, choose 9:16. If you need both, generate the second version from the same script.

Step 4: Generate, fix scenes and export

  1. Check the Estimated cost shown next to the button, then click Generate video. Failed builds are refunded automatically.
  2. Open the finished video from Videos in the sidebar: clicking the card opens the editor.
  3. Fix a line in the Script panel, which lists every caption segment with its text and start time. If you change the wording, open the Audio panel and click Re-generate on that voiceover so the narration matches (paid plans, 10 credits per started 500 characters).
  4. Swap a scene you don't like: select the image clip, then click Replace to pick another file or use Regenerate/Edit image to redo it with a prompt.
  5. Trim by dragging a clip's edge on the timeline, or press S to split at the playhead.
  6. Click Export (or Export / Publish on a free account) and download in 720p, 1080p or 4K.

Once it looks right, send it to grandparents and relatives, play it at bedtime or on a weekend movie night, or post it to TikTok, Instagram or YouTube straight from Revid if the story is yours to share.

Can you turn an illustrated story into a video with its own pictures?

Yes. Photograph each illustrated page, then either choose Your own media as the media type in Step 3 so the video uses your images, or use Image Sequence to Video, which turns a series of photos into one video you can narrate.

If the illustrations are your child's own drawings, animate kids' drawings with AI instead: upload the artwork and it comes to life as a short clip. A homemade picture book with your child's art is the best of both worlds, since every image is already yours to share.

Other ways to make an AI story video for kids

The From script route is the most flexible children's story video maker in Revid, but a few tools fit specific requests better:

How do you make the same story video in another language?

Translate the finished project instead of rebuilding it. On the project card in Videos, open the menu and choose Translate, pick the Target language (74 are available) and leave Use another voice off to keep the same narrator. The translation keeps the edit, media, timing and captions, and costs 10 credits per 500 characters per voice segment.

Translate a finished story video into another language

The tool is also available directly as the AI video translator, which helps bilingual families who want the same bedtime story in both languages.

Can you share a video made from a published picture book?

Keep it in the family. A published picture book's text and illustrations belong to the author and publisher, so a narrated video of it is fine for your own bedtime screen. Posting it publicly is different: that needs the copyright holder's permission.

If you want a story video you can post anywhere, use a story you wrote, one the script generator wrote for you, or a traditional fairy tale whose original text is in the public domain.

FAQ

How long does it take to turn a children's story into a video?

Under 5 minutes once you have the text. Scanning and cleaning a printed book adds a few minutes, depending on how many pages it has.

Is Revid free for making kids' story videos?

You can start free: sign-up is free and new accounts get free credits to try video creation, with no credit card needed. Regular creation then uses the monthly credits of a paid plan, starting at $39/month, and Revid shows the estimated cost before you click Generate video.

Can I narrate the story in my own voice?

Yes. Record yourself reading the book on your phone, then use the From a link or audio tab on the Create page to turn the recording into a captioned video. Voice cloning, which lets an AI voice sound like you, is available on the Elite plan and above.

What is the best visual style for a kids' story video?

Animated AI images give the classic storybook feel, and AI video adds real movement if you have a subscription. Describe the look you want, such as soft 3D cartoon or watercolor, in a bracket note at the start of each line.

Can I use a story my child made up?

Yes, and it is the easiest story to share publicly because it is yours. Type it out with one line per page, or let the script generator polish it, then follow Step 2.
