Comedy sits near the top of every format Revid measured. Only challenges did better (182K median views, 25.6% past 1 million). Mood tells the same story. Videos whose dominant emotion was humor had a 121K median and 19.3% passed 1 million. Only outrage did better (156K, 23.7%), and inspirational videos trailed far behind (45K). Comedy that pokes at a shared annoyance (landlords, group chats, airport lines) gets both effects at once.
High-arousal emotions (outrage, humor, sadness) earned the most views. Calm, inspirational videos earned the least, even though they collect the most likes per view.

Videos that talked throughout (300+ characters of speech) had 68K and 11.9%. A visual gag, a reaction face or one line of on-screen text often beats a monologue.

1. Pick one humor lane
Decide what kind of funny you are before you film. These are the main lanes on TikTok:

2. Write the punchline first
Most funny videos fail because the creator starts filming and hopes the joke shows up. Write the last line or the final visual first, then work backward to the shortest setup that makes it land. If the setup needs more than one sentence of explanation, the joke is too complicated for a short video.
3. Open on the hook
Viewers decide in the first few seconds whether to keep watching, so the opening shot has to promise a laugh. Three openings that work for comedy:

- The chaotic moment first, followed by "let me explain".

Nearly every funny TikTok runs on four beats. The hook stops the scroll, the setup creates an expectation, the twist breaks it, and the tag adds a second, smaller laugh or loops back to the start so the video replays.

5. Film it as POV, not a selfie
Shooting style matters for comedy. In the same dataset, POV videos had a 107K median and 19% passed 1 million, while selfie-style videos had 48K and 9.2%. POV puts the viewer inside the joke. Pair it with on-screen text instead of long dialogue and you get the low-speech pattern that performed best.
6. Add the sound last
Pick the audio after the cut, so it fits your timing instead of dictating it. Search TikTok for a mood plus "sound" ("awkward sound", "dramatic sound") and open the Sounds tab, or check the viral TikTok songs right now. A sound effect on the twist (a record scratch, a sad violin) often gets a bigger laugh than background music.
7. Edit tight
Cut every pause before and after a line, because comedy dies in dead air. Add captions so the joke works with the sound off. Let the joke decide the length. In Revid's 12-month study, every length bucket from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes had a median between 58K and 76K views, so no length is a magic number. Videos under 15 seconds got the most shares per view (1.41 per 100), so one-beat jokes belong there. A sketch with characters can run longer as long as every second earns a laugh.

How to trick someone into saying something funny on TikTok
The classic "say this" tricks use wordplay so the person blurts out something they did not mean. Three that still get laughs:
- Ask them to spell "I C U P" out loud, slowly. Spoken, it sounds like "I see you pee."
- Have them say "silk" over and over, then ask "What do cows drink?" Most people say "milk" (cows drink water).
- Have them repeat "toast", then ask "What do you put in a toaster?" They say "toast" (it is bread).

- On TikTok web, open Explore and choose the Comedy category.
- Search "funny" plus your niche ("funny nurse", "funny office") and open the Videos tab.
- Like and save the funny videos you watch: the For You feed is personalized, so it will show you more.

How to post funny videos on TikTok
- Tap + and record in the app (up to 10 minutes) or upload a finished video (up to 60 minutes).

- Time it. Posts at 3 to 6 a.m. US Eastern were the best window (4 a.m. had a 120K median) and 5 to 9 p.m. the weakest.
