What's Trending on Social Media in 2026: 9 Video Trends, With Data
The 9 social media video trends that matter in 2026, what changed on each platform, and where to check what's trending today, with data from 176,367 TikToks.

On this page
The biggest social media trends in 2026 are video trends: longer short-form videos (Reels and Shorts now run up to 3 minutes), AI-generated video and the labels that come with it, serialized micro-dramas, social shopping, creator-led ads, lo-fi content and social search. For today's sounds, hashtags and memes, check a live tracker, because those change daily.
The same trend can help you on one platform and hurt you on another. In Revid's study of AI videos vs real footage, AI-generated TikToks averaged 1.4M views against 661.4k for real footage. On X, Instagram and Threads, AI visuals were 5x more common among low-engagement posts than among viral ones. Copying a trend without checking where it works is the fastest way to waste a week of posting.
What is a social media trend?
A social media trend is a format, sound, topic or behavior that many accounts copy at the same time because audiences are rewarding it. There are two kinds, and they need different responses:
| Type | Examples | How long it lasts | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro trend | A sound, a meme template, a hashtag challenge | Days to a few weeks | Post your version fast or skip it |
| Macro trend | Longer Shorts, AI labels, social shopping | Years | Change how you plan and produce content |
This article covers the macro trends of 2026. The next section shows where to see the micro trends live.
What's trending on social media right now?
No article can tell you what's trending today, so use a source that updates on its own. These answer the "right now" question for each need:
| What you want to know | Where to check |
|---|---|
| TikTok trends today (rising videos, sounds, hashtags) | TikTok trends today |
| Trending TikTok hashtags by niche | Trending TikTok hashtags |
| Trending songs and artists | Viral TikTok songs, plus YouTube's Trending Charts for music videos |
| What people are searching for | Google Trends and the search suggestions in TikTok and YouTube |
| Breaking topics and news | X's Explore tab and Threads search |
YouTube's Help Center now describes Trending Charts only for select categories (music videos, movie trailers and gaming), not a general Trending tab. Don't build a plan around "getting on Trending" there.

1. Short-form video is getting longer
Short-form video is still the center of every feed, but "short" now means up to 3 minutes. Since October 15, 2024, square or vertical YouTube videos up to 3 minutes count as Shorts. Since January 21, 2025, Instagram recommends reels up to 3 minutes to non-followers. Reels can run to 20 minutes, but anything over 3 minutes is not shown to new audiences.
Demand keeps rising. YouTube said in August 2026 that it sees over 200 billion daily Shorts views. Meta said Instagram Reels watch time grew more than 30% year over year in the US in Q4 2025.
Length matters less than people think. In Revid's 12-month study of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes, every length bucket from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes had a median between 58K and 76K views, with 61 to 90 seconds slightly ahead at 70K. Videos under 15 seconds had the lowest median (58K) but the most shares per view.
Decision rule: if your idea needs setup and a payoff, use 60 to 90 seconds. If it is one joke or one tip, cut it under 15 seconds and aim for shares. Either way, put the payoff promise on screen in the first second.
Following a trend only pays if you read the results. Retention, returning viewers and subscribers per video tell you which formats to repeat. This guide to YouTube channel metrics explains what each number means.
2. AI-generated video, and labels on all of it
AI video went from novelty to normal, and the rules caught up:
- TikTok requires a label on realistic AI-generated images, audio or video, and said in July 2026 it had labeled over 3 billion videos as AI-generated.
- YouTube has automatically labeled undisclosed videos with significant photorealistic AI since May 2026.
- Meta shows an "AI info" label on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. In September 2026, Instagram renamed its "AI creator" profile label to "AI-generated profile".
- The EU has applied the AI Act's rules requiring deep fakes to be clearly labeled since August 2026.
The label alone does not cost you reach: TikTok and YouTube both say disclosure does not affect distribution or eligibility to earn. Low-effort AI does. Sprout Social found in March 2026 that 50% of Gen Z have blocked, muted or unfollowed a brand or creator because their content felt like "AI slop". YouTube does not let mass-produced, template AI content monetize.
The tools changed too. OpenAI closed the Sora app on April 26, 2026 and removed the Sora 2 API on September 24, 2026. If your workflow depended on Sora, move to a model that is still offered.
How to use the trend:
- Use AI for what you can't film cheaply: historical scenes, explainers, impossible visuals.
- Keep a human angle: your opinion, your data, your script.
- Turn on the platform's AI label for anything realistic.
- On Instagram, X and Threads, mix AI visuals with real footage, since that is where AI posts tend to underperform.
Revid offers Seedance 2.5, MiniMax Hailuo H3, Wan 3.0 and Google Veo 3 under one subscription, and you can pick a model per scene.

3. Micro-dramas and serialized Shorts
Serialized short video is the fastest-growing format of the year. Deloitte predicts in-app revenue from micro-series (micro-dramas) will more than double to $7.8 billion in 2026, from a forecast $3.8 billion in 2025. YouTube began rolling out Shorts series in September 2026, which lets creators organize Shorts into seasons and episodes across web, mobile and TV.
Series work because each episode ends on an open question, which turns a one-time viewer into a returning one. To set one up:
- Keep the same characters, location and visual style in every episode.
- End every episode on a cliffhanger and number the parts clearly.
- Post on a fixed schedule so the audience knows when to come back.
You can draft episodes with consistent characters and voiced dialogue in Revid's AI short drama generator.
4. Challenges, comedy and faceless formats lead on views
Revid analyzed 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026. Challenges had the highest median views (182K, with 25.6% passing 1 million views), followed by comedy (155K, 22%) and reactions (105K). Storytelling (66K) and tutorials (62K) sat near the bottom.
The index only holds videos that already reached 1,000 likes, so it shows what top videos have in common, not causes. The full study of what makes a TikTok go viral explains the method.
Challenges and comedy passed 1M views about twice as often as tutorials and storytelling, which are the most common formats.

Show the data
| Median views | Share that passed 1M views | |
|---|---|---|
| Challenge | 182.3K | 25.6% |
| Comedy | 154.8K | 22.1% |
| Reaction | 104.8K | 16% |
| Dance | 83.8K | 15.5% |
| Storytelling | 66.1K | 12.2% |
| Lip Sync | 61.7K | 12.3% |
| Tutorial | 61.9K | 12.1% |
Marketers see the same pattern: in HubSpot's 2026 research, 48% of marketers said funny content yields the highest ROI among short-form content types.
Faceless content keeps growing too. In the same TikTok data, faceless videos had a 114K median against 67K for one person on camera. Faceless tutorials had 156K against 52K for on-camera tutorials. If you teach, try screen recordings or hands-only shots before you assume you need to be on camera.
One caution on reactions: since March 2026, Facebook treats reaction-only and clip-stitching reels as unoriginal and deprioritizes them. A reaction needs your own commentary or analysis to count.
5. Lo-fi content and positive social media trends
The BeReal moment faded, but its idea won: unpolished content often beats studio content. In Clutch's October 2025 survey, 44% of US consumers said they prefer casual, authentic videos from independent creators over polished brand spots. Add AI-slop fatigue, and the safest look in 2026 is a real person, a real place and a real result.
The positive trends build on that: mental health and wellness content, skill sharing, and honest reviews that show pros and cons. They also carry the most risk of bad information. Revid's fact-check of 3,000 viral health TikToks found that 66% of actionable health claims cited no evidence or only a personal story. Mental health was the biggest claim category (18% of claims).
If you post in this space:
- Cite the source on screen (a study, a clinician, an organization).
- Point viewers to a qualified professional for personal advice.
- Add a content warning before sensitive topics.
- Show the process (behind the scenes, failures, real numbers) rather than a highlight reel.
Prompt to try
Make a 45-second vertical how-to video on "how to choose a budget podcast mic". Open with the hook: "Looking for the best budget mic for podcasts? Check these three things first." Show the search phrase as on-screen text in the first second, cover three tips (USB vs XLR, dynamic vs condenser, room noise), use clean stock footage with bold captions, and end with a one-line summary.
6. Social search: people look things up on video apps
Video apps now work as search engines. In Adobe Express's 2026 survey, 49% of US consumers said they use TikTok as a search engine, up from 41% in 2024. The Reuters Institute found that in 2026, social media and video networks became the most widely used way to access online news: 54% of respondents, against 51% for news organizations' own sites and apps. Pew reports that 20% of US adults now regularly get news on TikTok, up from 3% in 2020.
That changes how you package a video:
- Say the exact search phrase in the first sentence ("best budget mic for podcasts").
- Put the same phrase in the on-screen text and the caption.
- Answer one question per video and name it clearly.
- Make evergreen how-to videos: they keep getting found long after a meme dies.
7. Social commerce and live shopping
Shopping inside social apps keeps growing. EMARKETER forecast US social commerce sales of $87.02 billion in 2025 and expects them to pass $100 billion for the first time in 2026. It estimated TikTok Shop's US sales at $15.82 billion in 2025, or 18.2% of US social commerce.
To join TikTok Shop's affiliate program as a US creator, you self-apply, must be at least 18 and need at least 1,000 followers. Accounts under 5,000 followers start in a pilot program for at least 30 days. Live selling continues on TikTok and Instagram, but Facebook shut down its dedicated Live Shopping feature in October 2022.
What sells in short video:
- The product in use in the first seconds.
- One problem it solves.
- A price or offer.
- A clear next step.
If you have a product page, Revid's product video generator reads the page, keeps the real photos and writes the script.
8. Creators are the ad channel now
Brands are moving budget from their own ads to creator content:
- Meta said the revenue run rate of its partnership ads (creator content run as ads) more than doubled year over year to $10 billion in Q1 2026.
- In LTK's September 2025 CMO study, 97% of CMOs said they will expand creator marketing budgets in 2026.
- On Collabstr's marketplace, UGC campaigns rose from 15% to 35% of all influencer campaigns in 2025.
Micro-influencers (commonly defined as 1,000 to 100,000 followers) benefit most, because brands increasingly pay for content they can run as ads, not for audience size. Small accounts also get more discovery on YouTube. Socialinsider's 2026 study found accounts under 5,000 followers averaged 15,160 views per YouTube Short, against 625 per Instagram Reel and 350 per TikTok.
Plan around the money rules too. From February 1, 2027, earning Shorts ad revenue in a month requires at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Small YouTube channels should count on brand deals and long-form videos, not Shorts payouts.
9. Freshness: same-day posts and trial reels
Recommendation feeds now favor what's new. Meta said same-day posts made up more than 30% of recommended Reels on Instagram and Facebook in Q1 2026, more than double a year earlier. Real-time content trends reward accounts that react within hours, not weeks.
Instagram's trial reels make testing cheaper:
- They are shown first to non-followers.
- Insights arrive within 24 hours.
- They don't affect the ranking of your standard reels.
You need a public account with at least 200 followers for professional accounts or 1,000 for personal accounts.

Where to spot social video trends early
The best places to spot social video trends early show engagement on fresh posts, not last month's recap. Three kinds of source cover most needs:
- The platforms' own search and trend pages.
- A live tracker (see the table near the top).
- A library of viral videos you can filter by niche.
Revid's library holds about 2.77 million short-form videos and posts with their public engagement data, and new TikToks are added every few minutes. For a full comparison of trackers, see these social media trend analysis tools.
Before you jump on a trend, run two checks: does it fit your niche, and is it still rising? If either answer is no, skip it.

How to turn a trend into a video with Revid
- Search Revid's viral library by topic, platform, engagement tier and length.
- Open a video and run Deep analysis (free, up to 60 a day). It shows the hook, the timed structure and three ways to adapt it to your niche.
- Choose "Make it about your topic" or "Same energy, new script". Revid keeps the structure and pacing and writes a new script, new visuals and an original music direction.
- Edit any scene in the timeline, then publish or schedule to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube from one queue.
The repurpose viral videos page shows every remix option.
FAQ
Which artists are trending across social media?
It changes every week, so check a live chart rather than a list. The viral TikTok songs tracker linked above shows which sounds and artists are rising now, and YouTube's Trending Charts rank music videos.
What is the next big thing in social media?
Serialized short video and AI-assisted creation are the two biggest shifts heading into 2027. YouTube now organizes Shorts into seasons and episodes, and micro-drama revenue is forecast to more than double in 2026. Expect stricter AI labels and originality rules to come with them.
How long do social media trends last?
Sound, meme and challenge trends usually last days to a few weeks. Format shifts such as longer Shorts or social shopping last years. If a micro trend is already everywhere in your niche, adapt its format instead of copying it.
Is it too late to jump on a trend?
Not if it is still rising in your niche and you can add your own angle. If the big accounts in your niche have all posted it, use the format with a new topic instead.
Why is a number or random word trending on social media today?
Usually it ties to a date, a score, a jersey number, a product launch or a meme. Search the term in X or TikTok search and sort by latest to see the posts driving it.
Do AI labels hurt reach on TikTok or YouTube?
No. TikTok and YouTube both say the AI disclosure label alone does not affect distribution or eligibility to earn. Failing to disclose realistic AI is what risks penalties.
