The Black Death was a literal apocalypse that wiped out a third of Europe in just five years.
While everyone else fled in terror, one doctor named Guy de Chauliac actually stayed
behind to face the nightmare. Serving the Pope in Avignon, he documented the
horror firsthand, describing giant boils and people coughing up blood. At the time,
doctors were helpless, blaming the plague on bad air or even the planets aligning. It got so bad that
society collapsed into panic and violence against outsiders. Chauliac’s writings remain our most
chilling window into how humanity tried to fight a killer they couldn't understand.
