You can win a Nobel Prize just by staring at the ocean. In 1921, Indian scientist
C.V. Raman was on a ship deck and couldn't stop looking at the deep blue water.
Everyone else thought the sea was blue just because it reflected the sky, but Raman refused
to accept that. He was actually a government finance officer by day, but he spent his
nights grinding in a dusty lab in Kolkata. He proved that water molecules scatter
light, discovering the famous Raman Effect. He became the first Asian scientist
to win the Nobel Prize, proving that the biggest secrets of the universe
are hiding right in front of your eyes.
