A king was once executed just for trying to raise taxes without permission. In the 1600s,
King Charles I of England wanted absolute power and cash, but Parliament said no.
This sparked a civil war. Parliament's army, led by Oliver Cromwell, captured the king,
and in 1649, they chopped off his head. England became a republic,
but soon Cromwell became a dictator. After he died, the monarchy returned, but the next kings
also tried to rule absolutely. So, in the "Glorious Revolution," they
were kicked out for good, replaced by a monarch who agreed to a Bill of Rights.
