To create a YouTube video with AI, choose a format (a Short up to 3 minutes or a long video), generate a script, turn it into scenes with an AI video tool, then add an AI voice-over and captions. Edit the result and upload it in YouTube Studio, turning on the "AI use" disclosure when the visuals look realistic.
Making the video is now the easy part. The harder part is that YouTube refuses to monetize AI videos that look mass-produced from generic templates. It made that rule explicit on July 15, 2025, when it renamed its "repetitious content" policy to inauthentic content. The channels that earn treat AI as the crew, not the director: the idea, the angle and the final edit stay theirs.
The workflow at a glance
Every AI YouTube video goes through the same seven steps, whatever tool you use. All-in-one tools automate the middle of the chain. The two ends (the idea, and the upload with the right metadata and disclosure) are still your job.
Step 1: Should you make a Short or a long-form video?
Decide this first, because it changes the script length, the aspect ratio, the thumbnail and how the video can earn.
| YouTube Shorts | Long-form video | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Vertical or square | Usually 16:9 landscape |
| Length | Up to 3 minutes (uploads since October 15, 2024) | 15 minutes by default; verified accounts can go longer, up to 12 hours or 256 GB |
| Custom thumbnail | Verified accounts, from YouTube Studio on a computer; 9:16 at 2160x3840 recommended | Verified accounts; 3840x2160 recommended (minimum 640 px wide), up to 50 MB on desktop, 2 MB on mobile |
| Title and thumbnail A/B tests | Not eligible | Up to 3 variants in Test & Compare |
| Best AI fit | Faceless explainers, lists, short stories, product clips | Narrated explainers, tutorials, commentary over AI visuals |
A simple rule: if you have no footage and want to publish often, start with Shorts. If you need watch hours for the Partner Program, you need long-form, because watch hours from the Shorts feed do not count toward the 4,000-hour threshold.
For Shorts, keep captions and key visuals away from the buttons and title overlay. Check your layout against the YouTube Shorts safe zone before you export.
Step 2: Start from an idea viewers already want
A blank prompt such as "make a video about dogs" gives the model nothing to work with, so it produces the average video in that niche. Generic gets skipped. Give the AI a specific angle, a format and an audience instead:
- Weak: "Create a video about dogs."
- Better: "Create a video about the top 5 most intelligent dog breeds and one surprising trait of each."
- Best: "Write a 60-second vertical video for first-time dog owners: the top 5 most intelligent dog breeds, one surprising trait each, ending with which breed suits an apartment. Tone: curious, slightly funny."
A good prompt names four things: the topic, the angle (what the viewer learns or feels), the format (list, story, tutorial, comparison) and the tone.
The fastest way to find an angle is to look at what already performs. In Revid you can search real viral videos by topic and engagement, run a free deep analysis that explains the hook and structure of any video, and turn that format into an original video on your own subject.
If you plan a faceless channel, the format matters more than the face. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, faceless videos had a median of 114K views, and 17.4% passed 1M views, against 67K and 12.7% for one person on camera. Faceless tutorials did especially well (156K median vs 52K for on-camera tutorials). This is TikTok data, and the sample only holds videos that already did reasonably well, so it shows what top performers share rather than a guarantee for YouTube. The method is in our study of what makes a TikTok go viral.
Faceless videos earned a median of 114K views, against 67K for videos with one person on camera, and passed 1M views 38% more often.

Make a 60-second vertical YouTube Short for first-time dog owners about the top 5 most intelligent dog breeds, with one surprising trait for each. Open with the hook "Number 3 is smarter than most toddlers." End by naming the best breed for an apartment and asking which breed surprised viewers. Tone: curious and slightly funny, fast cuts with captions.
Step 3: Write the script with AI, then make it yours
An AI script generator gives you a usable first draft in seconds. Most of the quality, and your eligibility to earn, comes from what you do to that draft. Use this structure for Shorts and for the opening of long videos:
| Part | What it does | Example (healthy breakfast Short) |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | Makes a specific promise in the first line | "Three breakfasts you can make before your coffee finishes." |
| Setup | Says who it is for | "No cooking skills, no fancy gear." |
| Body | Delivers the points, one idea per line | Overnight oats, a yogurt bowl, a two-ingredient egg wrap |
| Payoff | Gives the most useful or surprising detail last | "Prep the oats on Sunday and you are done for the week." |
| Call to action | Asks one specific question | "Which one are you trying tomorrow?" |
Then edit the draft with this checklist:
- Read it out loud and cut every sentence that sounds like a brochure.
- Mix short and long sentences, the way people talk.
- Add one thing only you know: a result, an opinion, a mistake you would warn a friend about.
- Check every fact. AI drafts invent numbers and names.
- Never just paste someone else's article into a voice generator. YouTube counts content that only reads out material you did not write (website text, news feeds) as reused content, and that policy applies to the whole channel.
Step 4: Generate the visuals
Pick a visual style that suits the topic, then keep it consistent across scenes so the video looks like one piece and not a slideshow of random clips.
| Visual type | Works best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Stock footage | Lifestyle, travel, business topics | Looks generic if every scene is stock |
| AI images with motion | Stories, history, explainers | Inconsistent characters between scenes |
| AI video clips | Hooks, cinematic scenes, product shots | Credit cost; realistic scenes need disclosure |
| Motion graphics and text | Lists, data, tutorials | Small text that is unreadable on phones |
| Your own screen recordings | Software tutorials, demos | Needs a clean desktop and readable zoom |
Two YouTube rules shape this step. Videos that stitch together unrelated or inconsistent AI clips to shock viewers cannot be monetized, and neither can realistic visuals that fake events. Every scene should serve the script.
AI visuals are not a shortcut to views everywhere. Revid's study of AI videos vs real footage found AI-generated TikToks averaged twice the views of real footage, while on X, Instagram and Threads AI visuals clustered in the lowest engagement tier. The audience and the format decide, not the technology.
Step 5: Add an AI voice-over, captions and music
The voice carries most of a faceless video, so spend time on it:
- Match the voice to the audience. A calm, low voice for finance or history, a faster, brighter one for lists and entertainment.
- Direct the delivery. Slow down on the key line, add a pause before the payoff, and re-generate any line that sounds flat.
- Use your own voice if you can. Cloning your own voice for voice-overs does not require an AI disclosure on YouTube.
A voiceover video maker handles voice, captions and timing in one pass. Burned-in captions matter because many people watch Shorts with the sound off.
For music, use licensed tracks. Most Shorts Audio Library songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short (some only 60 or 30 seconds). A Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim of any type is blocked globally, so one unlicensed song can kill the video.
Step 6: Edit, then upload with metadata that gets clicks
Watch the full video once before uploading and cut dead air, repeated points and any scene that does not match the narration. Retention is what the algorithm sees, so the first line and the pace matter more than polish.
Then upload in YouTube Studio or on YouTube and fill in the metadata within these limits:
| Field | Limit | What to put in it |
|---|---|---|
| Title | 100 characters | The search phrase plus a specific promise, front-loaded |
| Description | 5,000 characters | A summary of the video, key terms, links and chapters for long videos |
| Tags | 500 characters in total | Spelling variants of your main topic; tags matter less than title and description |
A YouTube title generator is useful for drafting ten options, then picking the clearest one. For long videos, test up to 3 titles and thumbnails with Test & Compare; YouTube keeps the variant with the highest watch time. For vertical videos, a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages, so design Shorts covers for vertical.
End with one specific question or prompt ("Which breed surprised you?") rather than a generic "like and subscribe". Specific questions get answers, and answers are comments.
Step 7: Do you have to label AI videos on YouTube?
Yes, when the content looks real. Use the "AI use" setting in YouTube Studio when you:
- make a real person appear to say or do something they did not
- generate a realistic scene that did not happen
- alter real footage of real events or places in a realistic way
You do not need to disclose non-realistic content (cartoons, obvious fantasy, motion graphics) or minor uses: AI-written outlines and scripts, titles, thumbnails, captions, beauty filters, or a clone of your own voice.
Disclosure does not by itself limit a video's audience or its eligibility to earn, according to YouTube. Skipping it is the risk: since May 2026, YouTube automatically labels undisclosed videos with significant photorealistic AI, and labels become permanent for content made with Veo or Dream Screen or carrying fully generative C2PA metadata. Creators who keep failing to disclose risk content removal or suspension from the Partner Program.
Can AI-generated YouTube videos make money?
Yes, if the final video shows your creative vision and gives viewers educational or entertainment value. YouTube explicitly allows AI for tasks like editing scripts or creating background visuals. It does not allow monetization of:
- AI content made with generic or unoriginal templates that looks mass-produced, without your own insight
- videos that stitch unrelated AI clips together to shock, or fake real events
- AI personas presented as human experts giving health, legal, financial or political advice
- videos that only read out text you did not write
To join the YouTube Partner Program for ad revenue today, you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. From February 1, 2027, new applicants need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, and earning Shorts ad revenue in a given month will require 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Monetizing creators keep 45% of the Shorts feed revenue allocated to them.
Which AI tool should you use to create YouTube videos?
AI video tools mostly do one job well. Pick by the job you need done, not by the longest feature list.
| Tool | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Revid | Complete Shorts and faceless videos: script, scenes, voice, captions, music, editing and direct publishing to YouTube | Free credits at sign-up to try it, then regular creation uses credits from a paid plan |
| Synthesia | Presenter-style avatar videos, corporate training, 140+ languages | Built around a presenter, less suited to feed-native Shorts |
| HeyGen | Realistic avatars and video translation with lip sync | Presenter videos rather than full scene-based Shorts |
| Lumen5 | Turning blog posts and articles into videos | Reading out text you did not write is not monetizable on YouTube |
| Runway | High-quality single AI clips with shot-level control | Script, voice, captions and assembly are up to you |
| OpusClip | Cutting your own long videos and podcasts into clips | Needs existing footage |
| Descript | Editing recorded video by editing the transcript | Works on recordings you already have |
If you are choosing between an avatar platform and a full short-form pipeline, our Revid vs Synthesia comparison lays out where each fits.
Adoption is no longer niche. Alphabet said that on an average day in December 2025, over one million YouTube channels used YouTube's new AI creation tools. Grand View Research valued the AI video generator market at USD 554.9 million in 2023 and projected 19.9% annual growth from 2024 to 2030 in its AI video generator market report. Third-party compilations such as 9cv9's list of AI video generator statistics, Vidjet's roundup of AI video creation statistics and seo.ai's estimate of how many videos are on YouTube give more context, but treat their figures as estimates rather than official data. The practical takeaway: more AI videos means generic ones get buried faster.
Prompt to try
Create a 45-second faceless YouTube Short with three healthy breakfasts you can make before your coffee finishes: overnight oats, a yogurt bowl and a two-ingredient egg wrap. Hook: "No cooking skills, no fancy gear." Save the tip about prepping oats on Sunday for the end and close by asking which one viewers will try tomorrow. Bright, upbeat voice with bold captions.
How to create a YouTube Short with Revid
Revid runs steps 3 to 6 in one place and publishes straight to YouTube.
- Open the AI YouTube Shorts generator and paste an idea, a script or a link (an article, a YouTube video or a Reddit thread).
- Or start from a proven format: search Revid's library of about 2.77 million short-form videos with engagement data and choose "Make it about your topic" to apply a viral video's hook and pacing to your niche.
- Pick the visual style. Scenes can use stock footage, AI images or AI video, with the model chosen per scene (Seedance 2.5, MiniMax Hailuo, Wan 3.0 or Google Veo 3).
- Choose a voice from 1,000+ AI voices in 70+ languages and one of 30 caption styles.
- Fix anything in the timeline editor, then export in 720p, 1080p or 4K, or publish and schedule directly to YouTube.
For a whole channel without a face on camera, the faceless video generator uses the same workflow. New accounts get free credits to try it, paid plans start at $39/month with 2,000 credits, and a 30-second video with AI visuals and a voice-over costs about 40 to 80 credits. Review every script before it goes out: the creative vision YouTube asks for has to come from you.
FAQ
Can I create a YouTube video with AI for free?
Partly. Several tools offer free plans with watermarks, lower resolution or monthly limits. Revid sign-up is free, no credit card needed, and new accounts get free credits to try video creation. Regular creation then uses the monthly credits of a paid plan, from $39/month.
Do AI-generated videos get fewer views on YouTube?
Not because of the AI label: YouTube says disclosure alone does not limit a video's audience. AI videos lose views when they feel generic, so a specific angle and a strong first line matter more than the tool.
Can I run a faceless YouTube channel with AI?
Yes, and it can be monetized if each video adds your own insight, script and editing choices. Channels that mass-produce near-identical template videos or read out other people's text are the ones YouTube refuses to monetize.
How long does it take to make a YouTube video with AI?
An all-in-one tool can generate a Short in minutes. Budget extra time for the parts that decide performance: choosing the angle, editing the script and checking facts before you publish.
Can AI turn a long YouTube video into Shorts?
Yes. Clipping tools such as OpusClip find the strongest moments in a long video and reframe them vertically, and Revid can also turn a YouTube video into Shorts from its link.
