There is no single viral length. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks posted from October 2025 to October 2026, every length from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes had a median of 58K to 76K views. Use 16 to 30 seconds for one quick idea, and go over one minute if you want Creator Rewards earnings.
That flat result surprises anyone still repeating the old rule. Across Revid's full index of 2.39 million TikToks (all posting dates), 16 to 30 seconds clearly led, and the median TikTok in the 100M Club runs just 22 seconds. For recent posts, that edge has faded, and 61 to 90 second videos now beat the shortest ones. The real mistake is padding a 20-second idea to a minute, or cutting a story before its payoff.
What does the data say about TikTok length and views?
Revid indexes viral TikToks with their public engagement data. In the 12-month study of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, the median views of every length bucket, from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes, fell between 58K and 76K. Videos of 61 to 90 seconds reached a 70K median, ahead of videos under 15 seconds (58K). The shortest videos had one clear strength: the most shares per view, at 1.41 shares per 100 views. The full method and every chart are in the study What Makes a TikTok Go Viral.
Length alone barely moves views: every bucket lands between 58K and 76K median views (the 790 videos over 10 minutes are a small, unusual group). Clips under 15 seconds get shared the most per view.

Revid's full index tells an older story. Across about 2.39 million TikToks with 1,000+ likes from all posting dates, published on Revid's short-form video statistics page, the medians looked like this:
| Video length | Median views (full index, all dates) |
|---|---|
| Under 15 seconds | about 106K |
| 16 to 30 seconds | about 141K |
| 31 to 60 seconds | about 120K |
| 61 to 90 seconds | about 102K |
Both results are true for their samples. Over the long run, short videos of 16 to 30 seconds did best. In the last 12 months, length matters far less than it used to, and longer videos are no longer penalized.
Two limits matter here. Both samples only include TikToks that already reached 1,000+ likes, so they compare videos that did reasonably well. And the numbers show what successful videos have in common, not what causes success: a 90-second video does not go viral because it is 90 seconds long.

Make a 20-second vertical TikTok with one kitchen tip: how to keep cut avocados from browning. Open with the hook "Your avocado is brown by lunch because of this one mistake", show the fix in two quick steps, and end right on the result. Use bright close-up visuals, an upbeat voice and bold captions.
What is the best TikTok length for each type of video?
Since no length wins by itself, choose the length your idea needs. Use this table as a starting point.
| Video type | Length to aim for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Meme, visual gag, satisfying loop | Under 15 seconds | The most shares per view in Revid's data (1.41 per 100 views) |
| One tip, one hook and payoff | 16 to 30 seconds | The top bucket in Revid's full index; the 100M Club median is 22 seconds |
| Tutorial, story, product demo | 30 to 90 seconds | Room for steps or a story arc; 61 to 90 seconds reached a 70K median in the recent study |
| Videos you want paid through Creator Rewards | 1 minute or more | Only videos of at least one minute can earn |
| Explainers, commentary, deep dives into a topic | Several minutes | Works only if every section holds attention; in-app recording stops at 10 minutes |

Three decision rules cover most cases:
- If you can say it in one sentence, keep it under 30 seconds. Every extra second is a chance to lose the viewer.
- If the payoff needs setup (a reveal, a before-and-after, a recipe), take the time the setup needs, then end right after the payoff.
- If you want TikTok to pay you, plan the content for at least a minute from the script stage instead of stretching a short idea.
Among the TikToks in Revid's 100M Club (every TikTok over 100 million views), 59% run 30 seconds or less. Short still dominates the all-time biggest hits, so short ideas belong in your mix even when you also make longer videos.

Create a 75-second vertical TikTok explainer on why compound interest makes starting to save at 25 so powerful. Open with the hook "Two friends save the same amount, but one ends up with double", walk through the comparison step by step, and close on one clear takeaway. Use clean motion graphics, a calm, confident voice and synced captions.
Does TikTok favor videos over 1 minute?
TikTok does not publish a preferred length for the For You feed. What it does publish is a money rule: under the Creator Rewards Program, only videos at least one minute long, posted after you join, can earn.
The other Creator Rewards requirements, from TikTok Support:
- At least 18 years old (19 in South Korea)
- At least 10,000 followers
- At least 100,000 video views in the last 30 days
- A Personal account (Business, political and government accounts are not eligible)
Payouts are based on qualified views: unique For You feed views, excluding views under 5 seconds and paid, promoted or artificial views. A video starts earning after 1,000 qualified For You feed views, and TikTok publishes no fixed rate per 1,000 views. Looping videos, lightly modified reposts, Duets, Stitches and photo-only videos are not considered original, so a 1-minute video made by looping a 15-second clip will not earn. For the other ways small accounts get paid, see our guide to TikTok monetization for small creators.
How long can a TikTok be?
TikTok uploads can be up to 60 minutes long. Videos recorded with the in-app camera can be up to 10 minutes. TikTok Studio Web accepts landscape or vertical uploads up to 60 minutes in 1080p, 2K or 4K, with files up to 30 GB. The often-repeated 3-minute limit is out of date.
How long should YouTube Shorts be?
YouTube does not publish an ideal Shorts length, and no public data set measures it the way Revid's index measures TikTok. The rules you can act on:
- Maximum length: square or vertical videos up to 3 minutes long, uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, are classified as Shorts.
- Music: most Shorts Audio Library songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short, and some tracks only for 60 or 30 seconds.
- Claimed content: any Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim is blocked worldwide and cannot be monetized.
In practice, a Short that works on TikTok usually works on Shorts at the same length, as long as it stays under 3 minutes and follows the music rule. The TikTok data above is the best public guide to pacing, but it is TikTok data, so check your own Shorts retention in YouTube Studio before you change a format. Instagram Reels follow a different cap: reels can run up to 20 minutes, but reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to non-followers. Our guide on how long an Instagram video should be covers Reels in detail.
What about long YouTube videos?
By default, YouTube uploads are limited to 15 minutes; verified accounts can upload longer, up to 256 GB or 12 hours. For long videos, retention is the measure that matters: make the video as long as the content holds viewers. Vidyard's 2024 benchmark data on business videos found that 65% of viewers stay engaged to the end of a video under 1 minute, against 20% for videos over 20 minutes, according to Vidyard's business video benchmarks. Long videos need a reason to exist beyond being long.
How to find the right length for your own videos
- Write the hook first. If the first line does not earn the second, no length will save the video. Our list of TikTok hooks that stop the scroll gives you tested openers.
- Cut to the payoff. Read the script aloud and delete every line that does not move toward the point. Pacing matters more than the clock: in Revid's 12-month study, videos with under 40 characters of speech had a 123K median, against 68K for videos that talk throughout (300+ characters).
- Check where viewers leave. In TikTok Studio (profile > menu > TikTok Studio > Analytics), compare average watch time with your video length. If most viewers leave at the same moment, cut or rework that part. A free TikTok account audit shows which of your own videos and lengths perform best.
- Test one idea at two lengths. Post a short cut and a longer cut of the same idea a few days apart, and keep the one that holds viewers longer.
- Study your niche. Revid's viral video library lets you filter real short-form videos by topic, engagement and length, so you can see which durations work for your subject. The free deep analysis (up to 60 a day) breaks any video into a timed structure, showing where the hook ends and the payoff lands.
Make a TikTok at the right length with Revid
- Open the AI TikTok video generator and paste a script or a link.
- Revid builds the video: matching visuals, an AI voice-over that reads your script, and synced captions. A shorter script gives a shorter video, so trim lines to hit the length you chose.
- Fix any scene in the timeline editor, then publish or schedule directly to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
If you already have a long YouTube video, the YouTube clip maker turns it into short vertical clips you can test at different lengths.
FAQ
Do longer TikToks get more views?
Not by themselves. In Revid's study of 176,367 TikToks posted from October 2025 to October 2026, medians stayed between 58K and 76K views from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes. A longer video only gets more views when the extra time keeps people watching.
Is 15 seconds too short for TikTok?
No, if the idea fits. Videos under 15 seconds had the lowest median in the recent study (58K views) but the most shares per view, which makes them a good fit for memes and visual gags. They cannot earn Creator Rewards, which require at least one minute.
How long should a TikTok tutorial be?
Aim for 30 to 90 seconds for most tutorials: show the result first, then the steps, then stop. Tutorials had a 62K median in Revid's study, close to the overall median, so clarity and pacing matter more than length.
Can I post the same video on TikTok and YouTube Shorts?
Yes, at the same length, as long as it is under 3 minutes and any claimed music stays under one minute on Shorts. For Instagram Reels, keep it under 3 minutes if you want it recommended to non-followers.
