How Long Should an Instagram Video Be in 2026? Lengths by Goal

Most Reels should run 7 to 30 seconds for reach and 60 to 90 seconds when they teach or prove something. Here are the limits for every Instagram format, the 3-minute rule, and what view data says about length.

On this page

Most Instagram Reels should run 7 to 30 seconds for reach and 60 to 90 seconds when the video needs to teach or prove something. Instagram allows Reels up to 20 minutes, but only Reels of 3 minutes or less are recommended to people who don't follow you.

The common mistake is picking a length before picking a goal. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes, every length from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes landed in a narrow band of median views (58K to 76K). Runtime alone rarely decides whether a video works. Whether the idea fills the runtime does.

Instagram video length limits by format

Each Instagram format has a maximum length and a length that actually works. They are rarely the same number.

FormatMaximum lengthBest length
Reels20 minutes (recorded and edited in the app); only Reels up to 3 minutes are recommended to non-followers7 to 30 seconds for reach; 60 to 90 seconds for tutorials and proof
Feed videoNew video posts are shared as Reels, so Reels limits apply15 to 60 seconds
StoriesClips up to 60 seconds (as documented in Meta's API)5 to 15 seconds per clip
LivePlanned by session, not by secondsAs long as the conversation holds
AdsVaries by placement: check Meta Ads Manager10 to 15 seconds for awareness; up to 60 seconds for conversion
Reels published via the Graph API3 seconds to 15 minutesSame as Reels

Instagram's own Reels feature page describes the recording and editing tools; the 20-minute limit and the 3-minute recommendation cap come from the Instagram Help Center. For the frame side of the spec (1080 x 1920, aspect ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 30 FPS), see our guide to Instagram Reel size and specs.

How long should an Instagram Reel be?

For reach, keep a Reel between 7 and 30 seconds. For a tutorial, comparison or product walkthrough, 60 to 90 seconds gives you room to show the steps and the proof. Go past 90 seconds only when every extra section adds a new step or a new piece of evidence.

The hard rule is the 3-minute line. Reels longer than 3 minutes are not recommended to non-followers, so they only reach people who already follow you. Instagram raised that line on January 21, 2025; before that, only Reels up to 90 seconds were recommended to new audiences, which is why so much older advice still says 90 seconds is the maximum.

Scale from 0 to 20 minutes: Reels up to 3 minutes reach non-followers, longer Reels reach followers only
Instagram's 3-minute line for Reels recommendations

Use these working ranges:

  • 7 to 15 seconds: one visual idea, a reaction, a trend, a single tip, a fast reveal.
  • 20 to 45 seconds: one focused explanation, one product benefit, a short tutorial.
  • 60 to 90 seconds: proof, a comparison, a story with a payoff, a step-by-step method.
  • Over 90 seconds, under 3 minutes: detailed education or a full walkthrough the viewer came for.
  • Over 3 minutes: content for existing followers only, such as a full class or a long interview.

A quick test before export: if removing a sentence makes the video clearer, remove it. If removing it means the viewer misses the proof, keep it.

What is the best Instagram video length for each goal?

The right length depends on what you want the viewer to do after watching. Reach, shares, saves and sales ask different things of the edit.

GoalLengthWhat goes in it
Reach new people7 to 15 secondsOne idea, visible in the first frame, clean loop or ending
Explain or persuade20 to 45 secondsProblem, method, result, one next step
Earn saves and shares60 to 90 secondsA useful sequence or a takeaway worth sending to a friend
Teach a process60 seconds to 3 minutesEvery step shown long enough to follow
Sell to warm followers60 to 90 secondsOffer, proof, objection, action

Prompt to try

Create a 12-second vertical Instagram Reel showing one common skincare mistake and its fix. Open on the mistake in the first frame with the hook "Stop putting sunscreen on like this." Use fast close-up visuals, bold captions and an upbeat track, ending on a clean before-and-after that loops.

Awareness: short and instantly clear

Top-of-funnel Reels work best at 7 to 15 seconds. Examples: a before-and-after, one surprising product feature, a reaction to a problem your audience recognizes, one mistake and its fix. Don't introduce your company, explain the whole category and add a call to action in the same 10 seconds. If the idea needs a paragraph of context, it belongs in a longer cut.

Consideration: enough time for proof

Mid-funnel videos need 20 to 45 seconds. A simple structure:

  1. Name the viewer's problem in the first line.
  2. Show the feature or method.
  3. Show the difference it makes.
  4. Give one clear next step.

A booking tool, for example, can show a missed appointment, the booking flow, and the confirmation screen in about 30 seconds. That persuades better than a logo animation and doesn't require a full tutorial.

Prompt to try

Create a 75-second vertical Reel tutorial on setting up an eSIM on an iPhone for the first time. Hook: "Landed abroad with no signal? Fix it in 4 steps." Give each step its own scene with clear on-screen captions and a calm voiceover, and skip any intro or greeting.

Run it in Revid

Tutorials and conversion: time each step

Step-by-step content needs time per step, not a target total. An onboarding video that walks new users through an eSIM setup, like the steps in Simsima's guide for first-time eSIM users, fails at 15 seconds because nobody can follow it. Give each step its own beat, then cut everything around the steps. Longer cuts still need a fast open: start with the problem or the result, never with a greeting or a logo.

What does the data say about video length?

Short-form data says length matters less than most advice claims. Revid indexes viral TikToks with their engagement data, and the pattern is worth knowing even on Instagram (this is TikTok data, not Instagram data).

In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, every length bucket from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes had a median between 58K and 76K views. Videos of 61 to 90 seconds reached a 70K median. Videos under 15 seconds had the lowest median (58K) but the most shares per view: 1.41 shares per 100 views. The full method is in our study of what makes a TikTok go viral.

Length alone barely moves views: every bucket lands between 58K and 76K median views (the 790 videos over 10 minutes are a small, unusual group). Clips under 15 seconds get shared the most per view.

3 to 10 min76.4K12.4%1
10 min+129.6K13.8%0

Two caveats. The sample only holds TikToks that already passed 1,000 likes, so it shows what successful videos have in common, not what causes success. And in Revid's full index of about 2.39 million TikToks across all posting dates, 16 to 30 second videos had the highest median (about 141K): the edge of very short videos has faded for recent posts. Our breakdown of TikTok video lengths that go viral covers both samples.

Audience surveys point the same way for Instagram. In Sprout Social's 2026 Content Strategy Report, 52% of social media users said they are most likely to interact with short-form video (under 60 seconds) on Instagram, while only 19% favor videos longer than 60 seconds.

The practical rule: default to under 60 seconds, and go longer only when the content earns it.

How long should an Instagram Story be?

Aim for 5 to 15 seconds per Story clip. Each clip should carry one update, one question or one action, and a sequence of clips can carry a longer message. Meta's API documents Story videos up to 60 seconds, but a clip that long reads as a lecture in a format people tap through. Our guide to Instagram Story length covers the 24-hour window and how longer clips are split.

How long should an Instagram ad be?

Match the ad's length to the campaign objective, because the viewer didn't choose to watch it:

  • Awareness: 10 to 15 seconds, one benefit and one visual hook.
  • Consideration: 15 to 30 seconds, problem, demonstration and a reason to believe.
  • Conversion: 15 to 60 seconds, offer, proof, objection handling and action.

Show the product or offer in the opening seconds, not in the last frame. In Stories placements, open directly, use readable captions and ask for one action. Placement limits change, so check the length allowed for each placement in Meta Ads Manager before you export.

How to find the right length for your account

The ranges above are starting points. Your own numbers decide. Cross-platform benchmarks like Hootsuite's guide to social media video length are useful for a first guess; testing tells you what your audience does.

  1. Cut the same idea twice: a short discovery version (under 20 seconds) and a longer version with proof (60 to 90 seconds).
  2. Post one as a trial reel. Trial reels are shown first to non-followers, return insights within 24 hours, and don't affect how your standard Reels rank. They require a public account with at least 200 followers (professional accounts) or 1,000 followers (personal accounts).
  3. Compare views, average watch time, shares and saves. Instagram insights now lead with Views (every play) and show Viewers (unique accounts) separately.
  4. Once you pass 100 followers, check follower activity in insights, which covers up to the past 90 days, and repeat the test on the next three ideas before changing your default.

Judge each cut by the metric tied to its goal: watch time and reach for the short cut, shares and saves for the long one.

You can do that check with our free Instagram Reels safe zone checker.

Make several lengths from one idea

Length is a packaging decision. One idea can become a 10-second Story, a 25-second Reel and a 60-second walkthrough, each with a different job:

  1. The strongest visual or claim becomes the short discovery cut.
  2. The explanation becomes the consideration version.
  3. The proof, steps or objection handling becomes the long cut.
  4. The reminder or direct prompt becomes a Story clip.

Build the short cut around the strongest moment, not by deleting random sections from the long one. For a full workflow, see our guide to repurposing video content with AI, and for other platforms, our social media video length guide.

How to make both cuts with Revid

  1. Open Revid's AI Reel generator and start from an idea, a script or a link.
  2. Write a short script for the discovery cut (one claim, one payoff) and a longer one for the proof cut; Revid generates the scene visuals, voice-over, captions and music for each.
  3. Trim or rework any scene in the timeline editor, then export in 1080p or 4K at 30 or 60 fps.
  4. Publish or schedule both versions to Instagram from the same queue, and compare their views, likes and comments in Revid.

If you already have long YouTube videos, the YouTube to Instagram Reels converter cuts them into vertical clips. You can also search Revid's viral video library by topic, platform and length to see what runtimes already work in your niche before you write.

FAQ

Can an Instagram video be longer than 60 seconds?

Yes. Reels can be up to 20 minutes long when recorded and edited in the app, and new feed videos are shared as Reels. Keep a Reel at 3 minutes or less if you want it recommended to non-followers.

Is a 3-minute Reel too long?

Not if the content needs it. A tutorial or detailed walkthrough can justify 3 minutes and still reach new people, but a single visual hook stretched to fill the time will lose viewers early.

What length should a new account use for its first Reels?

Start at 7 to 15 seconds for visual ideas and 20 to 45 seconds for anything that needs a short explanation. Simple, focused cuts make it easier to see which topics and openings hold attention.

Do longer Reels get more reach?

No, length alone doesn't buy reach. In Revid's TikTok data, median views barely changed between lengths, and Reels over 3 minutes lose recommendations to non-followers entirely.

What should you do if your video is too long?

Cut the setup, repetition and weaker examples before touching the proof or payoff. If it still runs long, split it into a series where each part ends with a reason to watch the next.
