1080 × 1920

Instagram Reels safe zone dimensions

On a 1080 × 1920 Reel, the safe zone is the 895 × 980 px area that starts 270 px from the top and 65 px from the left. Keep 670 px clear at the bottom for your profile, caption and audio, and 120 px on the right for the like, comment, repost and share buttons.

These margins follow Meta's guidance for Reels: 14% of the height at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side. The right side is widened to 120 px because the button column, with a count under each icon, is wider than 6% of the frame.

Zone by zone

What Instagram covers on a Reel

The bottom of a Reel is busier than on any other short-video app. Here is what each part of the interface hides; the checker above draws it over your own video.

Top 270 px

The Reels header

The status bar, the Reels title and the camera button. It looks thin, but notches and status bars differ between phones, so Meta keeps 14% of the height clear.

Right 120 px

The button column

Like, comment, repost, share, the three-dot menu and the square audio thumbnail, stacked over the lower half. Counts sit under each icon, so the column is wider than it looks.

Bottom 670 px

Profile, caption and audio

Your profile picture, username and Follow button, the first line of the caption, the audio pill, and labels such as collab partners, location or Paid partnership. Tapping more spreads the caption over even more of the video.

Sides 65 px

The edges

Swipe gestures and narrower screens eat into the sides. Keep text 65 px in so letters never touch the frame.

Covers

Reel covers: the 3:4 profile grid and 4:5 feed crops

Your Reel plays at 9:16, but two places show less of it. Since January 2025 the profile grid shows every post at 3:4, and when a Reel appears in the home feed it is often previewed at 4:5. Turn on "Profile grid and feed crop" in the checker to see both lines on your own video.

Home feed preview (4:5)The middle 1080 × 1,350 px285 px at the top and 285 px at the bottom

Cover text: between 285 and 1,250 px

That band is the only part of the frame that survives all three views: inside the safe zone, inside the 3:4 grid and inside the 4:5 feed crop. Put the cover headline there and it reads everywhere.

Check the grid before you share

On the last screen before you post, tap Edit cover, pick a frame or upload an image, and open the Profile grid tab. You can also change the cover later from the Reel's menu.

Placement

Where to put text and captions on a Reel

Measured on the 1080 × 1920 frame. Everything below stays inside the 895 × 980 px safe area.

ElementWhereWhy
Hook textUpper middle, about 330 to 700 px from the topBelow the header and inside the 3:4 grid crop, so the first frame doubles as a cover.
SubtitlesCentered, about 950 to 1,250 px from the topInstagram's caption and audio own the bottom 35%, so Reels subtitles sit higher than on TikTok.
FacesEyes about a third of the way down, centeredClear of the button column and inside the 4:5 feed preview.
Product, price, CTAMiddle of the frame, never below 1,250 pxBelow that line the caption, Follow button and ad CTA bar take over.
Logo or watermarkTop left, inside the safe area (85 px from the left, 310 px from the top)Visible full screen and on the profile grid.

Posting your TikToks as Reels

A layout that is safe on TikTok is not automatically safe on Reels. Instagram covers 190 px more of the bottom (670 against 480) and 50 px more of the top.

  • Subtitles: Move them up about 200 px, or keep them above 1,250 px from the start.
  • Watermark: Export without the TikTok logo. Instagram has said it makes Reels with other apps' watermarks less discoverable.
  • Cover: Pick the cover again inside Instagram so the 3:4 grid crop keeps your headline.
  • One edit for every app: Use the All 3 view in the checker: a 823 × 960 px area that TikTok, Reels and Shorts all leave clear.

Instagram Reels size checklist

  • Size: 1080 × 1920 px, a 9:16 vertical frame. Smaller files get upscaled and look soft.
  • Format: MP4 or MOV, H.264, 30 fps.
  • Cover: 1080 × 1920, with the headline in the middle 1080 × 1,440 px so the profile grid keeps it.
  • Length: 90 seconds works on every account; longer limits depend on the account.
  • Landscape: 16:9 plays small with black bars in the Reels tab. Reframe it to 9:16.
  • Text size: Keep every line under 895 px wide so it fits between the edge and the buttons.

Not sure about yours? Drop it in the checker: it reads the size, shape and length of your Reel and tells you what to fix.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Instagram Reels safe zone?
It is the part of a 9:16 Reel that Instagram's interface never covers. Instagram puts the Reels header at the top, the like, comment, repost and share buttons down the right side, and your profile, caption and audio across the bottom. On a 1080 × 1920 Reel that leaves a 895 × 980 px area for text, faces and calls to action.
What are the Instagram Reels safe zone dimensions?
Keep 270 px clear at the top, 670 px at the bottom, 65 px on the left and 120 px on the right of a 1080 × 1920 Reel. The safe area is 895 × 980 px, starting 270 px from the top and 65 px from the left.
Where should I put text on an Instagram Reel?
Put the hook in the upper middle, about 330 to 700 px from the top, and subtitles between about 950 and 1,250 px from the top. Instagram's caption and audio take the bottom 35% of the frame, so Reels subtitles sit higher than they would on TikTok.
Why is my Reel cover cropped on my profile?
Since January 2025 the Instagram profile grid shows posts at 3:4 instead of square. A 1080 × 1920 Reel keeps only its middle 1080 × 1440 px on the grid, losing 240 px at the top and the bottom. Keep your cover text between 285 and 1,250 px from the top and check the Profile grid tab in Edit cover before you share.
Is the safe zone different for Instagram Reels ads?
Meta's ad guidance for Reels keeps 14% of the height clear at the top, 35% at the bottom and 6% on each side, the same bands this page uses (with 120 px on the right for the buttons). Ads also show a Sponsored label and a call-to-action bar near the bottom, and Meta asks ads that carry a disclaimer to keep the bottom 40% clear.
Is the Reels safe zone the same as TikTok's?
No. Instagram covers more of the frame: 670 px at the bottom against TikTok's 480, and 270 px at the top against 220. Subtitles placed for TikTok often end up behind the Reels caption, so move them up about 200 px when you repost.
How long can an Instagram Reel be?
Every account can post Reels of at least 90 seconds. Longer limits (3, 15 or 20 minutes) have been rolling out account by account, so the length options in your Reels camera are the real answer for your account.
Does this tool upload my Reel?
No. The checker reads your file inside your browser and never sends it anywhere, which is why it is instant even for long videos. A file only leaves your device if you click "Caption it with Revid", which uploads it to open Revid's caption tool.
