How we measured this

TikTok data: every video in the Revid TikTok index posted January 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026 (1,159,630 videos), scanned in full, so medians are exact. The index is a keyword-sampled crawl, not a census: it holds 1,630 80s videos from 2025 and only 46 from 2026, so every monthly chart covers 2025 only.
An 80s video names the decade in a hashtag (250 spellings, from #80s and #1980s to #80sthrowback and localized forms), says 80s, 1980s or eighties in the caption, or carries a synthwave-family tag. Ages (“in their 80s”) are excluded. A hand review of 30 random matches found 20 clearly about the 1980s, 8 loosely related and 2 unrelated, so read this as 80s-tagged content. 700 videos have a strong signal (the caption says 80s, or two 80s hashtags).
Formats come from keyword rules on caption and hashtags, with the AI summary as a fallback; each video gets one format (right for 26 of the 30 reviewed). “Beat the month” compares each video's plays with the median of all index videos posted the same month. Play counts are as of the crawl date.
AI vs real uses the index's frame classifier, which labels videos posted May to December 2025; no 2026 video carries it, so this study cannot measure the AI share of the September 2026 wave itself. 6.1% of labeled 80s videos, 5.5% of retro and nostalgia videos, 3.4% of all videos and 48% of #darkfantasy videos are AI generated. Cells under 30 videos are not interpreted.
Search data: revid.ai's Google Search Console, queries containing 80s, 1980, eighties or 80's, July 1 to September 27, 2026. Google omits anonymized queries, so totals are a floor. Revid projects built on commercial songs and TikToks on sensitive topics are not featured.

In September 2026, people started generating videos that look like they were shot in the 1980s with AI video models: VHS grain, neon, synth music, period cars and fashion, often recreated films and "dark fantasy" scenes. On Google, searches for 80s AI video prompts that showed revid.ai went from 9 impressions in the first half of 2026 to 1,945 on Sep 10 alone, and 93% of the summer's impressions came in four days, September 9 to 12.

Do 80s videos do well on TikTok?

On views, slightly worse than average: only 44% of 1,630 80s TikToks posted in 2025 beat the median video posted the same month, where par is 50%, and 9.7% passed a million plays against 12.2% expected. On engagement, better: 9.3 likes per 100 plays against 7.2 to 8.0 for all TikToks month by month.
