How to find the BPM of a song
- 01
Drop the song
Pick an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC file. Your browser decodes it and the file never leaves your device.
- 02
Let it listen
The finder marks where drums and notes start, measures how regularly they repeat, and compares the harmony with the 24 major and minor keys.
- 03
Read the result
You get the BPM with its half and double time values, the key with its Camelot code, and the length of the song.
What the BPM and key are good for
DJ mixing
Match tempos, then use the Camelot code for smooth harmonic transitions: 8A mixes well into 7A, 9A and 8B.
Producing and remixing
Set your DAW to the song's tempo and key before you sample, chop or remix it.
Editing video to the beat
At 120 BPM a beat lasts 0.5 seconds and a bar of four beats lasts 2 seconds. Cut every 1, 2 or 4 beats.
Workouts and playlists
Sort songs by tempo for running, cycling or a party set that keeps its energy.
Typical BPM by genre
Most songs sit inside these ranges. Trap, dubstep and drum and bass are often counted at half or double these numbers, which is why the finder shows both.

What is the Camelot key?
The Camelot wheel numbers the 24 keys from 1 to 12, with A for minor keys and B for major keys, arranged so that neighbors sound good together. To mix harmonically, move to the same number (8A to 8B) or one step around the wheel (8A to 7A or 9A).
Private by design
Your song is decoded and analyzed by your browser in a background thread. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no file size cap, no signup and no queue.
BPM finder questions
- How accurate is the BPM finder?
- On music with a steady beat it reads the tempo to within a fraction of a BPM: in our tests on click tracks at 90, 128 and 174 BPM it lands within 1 BPM, with half or double time shown alongside. Live recordings that speed up or slow down get an average tempo, and the beat label tells you when to check by ear.
- Why does it show 87 BPM when the song feels like 174?
- Half time and double time are the same pulse counted two ways. The finder picks the value closest to how most people tap along and shows the other two under it. Drum and bass, trap and dubstep are often quoted at double or half the first number.
- What is the Camelot key?
- A DJ shorthand for musical keys: numbers 1 to 12 around a wheel, A for minor and B for major. Keys with the same number, or next to each other, mix without clashing.
- How do I find the BPM of a song without the file?
- Switch to Tap tempo and tap the button, or the space bar, on every beat while the song plays. After about eight taps the number settles. Pause for a few seconds to start over.
- Can it find the key of a song?
- Yes. It compares the song's harmony with the 24 major and minor keys and shows the closest match with its Camelot code. A song that changes key, or stays on one chord, can read as its relative key: C major and A minor share the same notes.
- Is the BPM finder free?
- Yes, free with no signup and no limit. The analysis runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded.
- Which files can I analyze?
- MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and FLAC, plus any other audio your browser can play.
- How do I edit a video to the beat of a song?
- Divide 60 by the BPM to get one beat in seconds: at 120 BPM a beat is 0.5 seconds. Cut on every 1, 2 or 4 beats. Revid's AI music video generator does this for you and cuts every scene on the beat.
